98 ram 1500 wont shift into third or fourth gear

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 98 ram 1500 sport 4x4, 318. Let it be known that I got it from my gramps and
he neglected it big time. Anyways, it wont shift into third or fourth, just keeps revving. It
goes "normal" until about 2500 rpm, then the engine just revs with no power output until
about 4000 rpm where you feel it pick back up. It goes about 50-55 at 4500-4700 rpm.

I have heard it could be the rear speed sensor causing this, which I am going to replace
anyways cause I have the infamous ABS and Brake light on. It IS NOT the tranny fluid
we already checked that.

I may also add that the odometer and speedometer are broke.

We had the speed sensor on the tranny checked last time we were in. It wasn't bad, they said it still worked fine. I'll probably check the tranny filter tonight if I can. I am at school currently, so I'll keep you updated. Also at about 4700 you can hear a wisteria from the engine. Probably unrelated, but IDK. I Appreciate the help.

Saw a video were a guy had the same issues. It was a governor pressure sensor and a governor pressure solenoid he called em. Anyways, they are in the transmission and easy to get to. Just need to drain the fluid and bolt of the bracket they are on. Cost about 200$ for both so they will come soon. Anyways, we replaced the rear axle speed sensor today and fixed the odometer and speedometer, as well as the ABS light and Brake light.

I have a Dodge Ram 3500 van with the exact same issues...abs, brake, check engine lights on, no speedo, and won't shift into 3rd or 4th gear. Did the governor pressure solenoid fix your shifting problems??

Yeah, but you wont want to try it. A couple days after this, not saying how this happened, but the truck got shifted into reverse at somewhere around 7 mph, and suddenly is started working normal lol. I wouldn't recommend that though xD

Same problem but no engine light came on. I replaced the speed sensor, same problem. Next I dropped the pan and replaced the Governer pressure solenoid, governor pressure sensor and transmission filter. This solved the problem, the truck runs well again. I got the whole kit for $99 on ebay and it came with replacement gaskets too.

I'm dealing with this, now. I've replaced both speed shift sensors, with no luck. I've heard that a bad I2 sensor, can also cause shifting problems, because they draw voltage from the transmission. Also fuses or relays can cause this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
