You have a couple of options. From what I gather , you can use a 5.9L v-8 from 1994 up to 2001 . The biggest diff from 1997 and earlier is the engine was bumped up to 235 horsepower in 1997. You could go with the 5.2L engine , it will have the same bolt pattern to match up with the transmission , but you might have issues with the computer matching up to the smaller engine. ( fuel delivery and economy) I hope this helps you out .

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram XLT I was wondering if I could swap it to the Hemi or bump it up 225 horsepower the way it is thank you
