where is the Overdrive solenoid located on a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500?

Asked by mciever Jan 29, 2007 at 08:35 AM about the 1997 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My check engine light is on and the diagnostic code show the Overdrive Solenoid.  I was wondering where it is located?  Can any wiring or fuses affect this?  I installed a new CD AM& FM radio, and had to cut a couple of plugs off the old radio, problem presented after that.

I believe that's a tranny component mciever, and I doubt the installation of your radio had much to do with it. This is something that you'll probably need professional help with, but you could try your local library to see if they have the Chilton's for your Ram. That will lead you right to it and suggest possible issues indicated by that diagnostic code. Good luck!

Overdrive solenoid is usually located on the valve body inside the tranny. Be sure to check and clean the wiring leading to the solenoid first.

the governer solenoid is in the valve body, just drop the pan and remove the filter and it is right there, at least on the torqueflites the rams came matched with. a new solenoid ought to run about 55-60 bucks

the governor solenoid is in the valve body along with the transducer these are installed in a separate block that is bolted to the valve body. They control the up and down shift, not the overdrive. the trans you have is a 46re if you have a button to turn off overdrive. if overdrive is in your selector then you have a 46rh the e stands for electric. the h stands for hydraulic anyway both trans are modified 727 or 518 back to your problem. if you have the 46re the solenoids (there are two ) tied together and screwed into the valve body next to the block that is bolted to the valve body that holds the governor and transducer it is hardwired to the plug that goes through the body of your trans.

Overdrive sensor is right next to the govenor sensor on the valve body in tranny. But it may not be that at all it may be your ecm , i had same problem with my 01 ram 1500 5.9l gas, it threw that code and i put 2 trans that i knew were good in it and it did the same thing so i replaced the ecm and its been fine since
