rims and hips O my

Asked by ramsX2 Jan 20, 2008 at 02:05 PM about the 1996 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Car Customization

We have just bought a sweet lil 1996 1500 1/2 ton.

I have a 3 parter here:

1)She currently has 15" rims and would like to put 16" rims on her, how do I go about finding a "conversion kit" or "plate"? .

2)We also plan on giving her some hips in the back too, Would it be possible to just "convert the current rear end into a dually?

3)Is it possible to put a 1 ton dually rear end into this 1/2 ton?

Thanks, Nicole

to answer, it will more than likely cheaper to sell/trade it for what you want, but if not, you can put 16" rims on it as long as you keep the overall height the same size and you can get 16" rims with the same bolt pattern. as for the dually rear and "hips" you will need an axle and casing as seeing a 1-ton wont fit in to a 1/2 ton. you will need new suspension, brakes. You will notice a much rougher ride. as for the body you will need new box sides and a welder (or someone to weld it up) and box mounts. I am sure I have missed a few things, but I figure you are looking at about $5000 to put hips on it. (a box or new box sides, whole rear end, suspension, Labour, paint, and some thing that are not mentioned. I am sure that $5000 is a little low. I am sure you could more than likely find a dually for what you will have to pay to do this. Also I am not sure where you live but if you buy or have a dually (I live in ontario, canada) you will need a yearly minstry inspection and safety. You will also double your gas useage, seeing the 1-ton rear end is alot beefier. Your engine might just not be good/strong enough to do this. You might just want to get some 33's and nice rims as well as some fender flares. I hope this helps and best of luck.

I have also seen "phantom duallys" where aftermarket dually fenders were installed on the bed and superwide pro-stock style rear tires were put on. as long as the bolt pattern is the same, there are no issues with 16" wheels on that truck. later years of that bodystyle came factory with that size.
