4x4 works without a load hooked to
it, hooked a trailer load of wood to it
4x4 quit working, dug a hole trying
to pull it out. Unhooked the trailer
4x4 worked and pulled out of the
hole

Are you expecting all four wheels to engage when you are in 4x4. That is not always how it works. If you have limited slip or one wheel wonder as they call it, it will not engage more than one wheel per axle at a time. normal operation of a standard 4x4 is this way - if you have a posi-traction rear end or from axle it should engage both wheel on that axle
