Is it dumb to fix a truck with 250K miles?

Asked by Loubert Jul 26, 2020 at 03:20 PM about the 1999 Ford F-350 Super Duty

Question type: General

I have a E-350 super duty gas box truck 10 Cyl. and the oil pump is dying. It
keeps losing pressure. Also the truck vibrate a little bit maintaining speed
between 40 mph and 50 mph, I'm thinking it's the transmission. I looked at
buying another used truck but they're 3 to 5 grand plus whatever repairs it
needs plus all the money and hours redoing the inside of the truck to setup
my tools.
What if I just spend the money and repair this one? Even if I have to swap
the engine and transmission it can't be that expensive... Also the front breaks
were done a few years ago and I have new tires. Is it dumb to keep fixing my
truck with 250K miles?
I live in West Palm Beach Florida 33415 where would be a good place to
have someone take a look at it and tell me what it would cost to repair it?
Thanks!

IT's not dumb if you like it and want to continue to drive it. Living in FL you don't have to worry about the body rusting. A rebuild trans will run you around $2500. Sawpping an engine will be closer to $5K if you are putting in a reman. A used one will be cheaper. The price is based on removal and reinstall with all the bits and setup and labor at a garage.

I would not put ten grand ( my estimate for another engine and transmission) into fixing it up unless the rest of the truck is in good shape and you plan on keeping the truck for several more years.
