Yukon Denali engine ticking

Asked by Guru9HR9GD Nov 20, 2021 at 12:23 PM about the 2001 GMC Yukon XL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Yukon Denali 6.0L and 92,101 miles on it. I have a recent ticking
in the engine. Took it to a mechanic, who has never serviced our vehicle for us
before and he said the ticking comes from the bottom of the oil pan area and
since the lifters cannot be replaced on this engine I would need a new engine.
Then I'm reading other people having ticking in their engines and others saying
that lifters CAN be replaced. Who do I believe?! I'm very confused please
advise and thank you!

The lifters can most assuredly be replaced. But the cost would exceed the value of the vehicle. On a 20 year old vehicle with nearly 100,000 miles on it I would recommend using a heavier weight oil and just keep driving it. If the vehicle sits a lot I would also recommend using it more often. More frequent oil changes would be helpful as well. Replacing the lifters is also a major job which will require most of the wiring to be disconnected and moved, accessories like the air conditioner compressor to be moved out of the way, etc. Keep in mind that most of these items have been untouched since the vehicle was new, 20 years old, and will surely not like to be moved around! I can guarantee that if you decide to replace the lifters the aftermath will be unending problems! Hope that helps! Jim

Jim, thank you so much for your help and suggestions and yes, it is VERY helpful!!! My son suggested using a heavier weight oil but it's nice to have a second opinion :) And I will definitely do more frequent oil changes and adding the Lucas additive too. I am driving it daily so I guess that's good except for using a lot of gas lol :( Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. Sincerely, Rhonda
