They are called interference engines. I don't know if the Jag V8 is or not. Do the V8's have a timing chain or belt?

Some engines has rubber belts that spin the cams. If they are interference engines, when the belt breaks, the pistons hit the open valves. It is important to change the timing belt at recommended intervals to prevent breaking.

It has a chain, matter of fact it has two chains, and no belt. Also it IS an interference engine, if the chain were to break the engine is destroyed from pistons hitting valves just as tenspeed said. It is far less likely to break, but they do stretch and jump time, and if it jumps enough it will be the same result as breaking.
