Will not start, clicking sound & a burning smell

Asked by adab1234 Oct 16, 2016 at 03:39 PM about the 2006 Lincoln LS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I turned the car on and it was making
whining noise as if it needed power
steering fluid ( hadn't turned the
steering wheel at all). Proceeded to
drive, the noise was still there & then
the burning smell came along stronger
and stronger ( battery smell or wires
not sure). I turned the car off went into
store, came back to start car and it
would not turn over: there was a
clicking noise. On the dashboard the
battery symbol was lit up and the
dashboard read system charging &
then read check traction control. I
pushed the traction control button and
then the the dashboard read traction
control off. I pushed the power control
to roll the windows up and it wouldn't
work, the car alarm starting going off
and then it turned off. I let the car rest
for a while, then I tried to start it again:
no start just same clicking noise. The
power button for the windows did work
thus time allowing the windows to roll
up, the seat adjustment worked, the
automatic steering wheel adjustment
worked while key is in the ignition, the
hazard lights worked, but the car still
would not start. I had the car towed
home. Please help me diagnose my car,
thanks.

Thank you both. I'm trying to get a hold of someone now to help me get them both checked out.
