Does a car have struts in front and shocks in the rear? Are shocks part of struts?

Asked by JeanMazda Apr 27, 2015 at 01:35 PM about the 2006 Mazda MAZDA3

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We were told the car needs right and left front struts and bearings and right and left rear
shocks. We are not sure what this means. Why not shocks in the front also or are struts
and shocks the same thing?

struts are on the front, and are a part of the spindle that turns with your front tires, on older models, shocks were used on the front and were not a part of the spindle, they were seperate, so yes struts are in the front and shocks in the rear, and if you need bearings, replace them, it's alot cheaper to have the bearings replaced than to replace the whole assembly, plus if the bearings give out while you're on the road, it could cause you to have an accident, good luck, i hope that this helped

It has MacPherson strut front suspension. Shock absorbers do just that - absorb shock and keep the car from bouncing but need suspension, coil springs, torsion bar or whatever it is that actually holds the car to the wheels.. A strut is part of the suspension. A shock is not A corner of a car, left front, left rear, and so on will have one or the other, never both. Fair enough. Sometimes I give mis-information. And I am David, aka FordNut. Mark is where you click if the answer was helpful, and it happens all the time. Cheers
