Question type: General

i HAVE RECEIVED CONFLICTING VIEWS ON HOW TO USE MY OVERDRIVE.
WHEN SHOULD I ENGAGE O/D?
FOR ECONOMICAL DRIVING SHOULD THE O/D LIGHT (WHICH SHOWS O/D OFF) BE LIT. OR, SHOULD THE CONTROL PANEL LIGHT BE OFF.
I LIVE IN A RURAL AREA AND DO NOT DO MANY LONG JOURNEYS

Over drive should be kept on unless towing at slower speeds. The reason behind this is with over drive off the transmission generates more heat. Heat is the enemy of your transmission.

Thank you for your time in answering my question.Reason for doubt is that recently I have had my car in two different garages. First one returned the car with no indication in the control panel. Next one returned the car with the light on the control panel showing o/d off.

stop and go traffic or short trips with ODon is what generates heat, turn OD off in this kind of driveing and in snow, ice.OD is ment for long trips,is a higher gear in tranny to lower rpm,s and get better gas milage.driveing like you posted, driveing with the OD on will heat up tranny,it needs to be off.

use it only on long trips with cruise control if you have it.. uphill and towing with OD is always a no-no...

So O/D OFF indicator light ON means 4-speed good for hills, down hills, towing it makes the car stronger. It the O/D OFF indicator light OFF is good for flat roads like in Florida. I live in Florida and by mistake we switch it to ON position, my car sounds like no wears are changing, the RPM stays at 3000 no changing gears sound and the engine sounds like making a huge effort to run...I dont like that. What would you recommend.
