Tansmission problems?

Asked by bianca72893 Aug 23, 2011 at 08:26 PM about the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

118,800 miles, Transmission might be going. When slowing down the car bucks at
downshift from 3rd to 2nd. When not in triptronic it revs to 3500 before shifting from first
to 2nd and almost red-lined  resulting in the check engine light to flash once. Possibly just
transmission fluid since the previous owner has just mentioned they have not filled it ever.
Could it possibly be another problem?

Have you changed the fluid in the trans.? It may be that simple, or it may be something electrical. Check and do this before you resort to replacing the trans. You are at the mileage for many concerns, depending on if you have or haven't serviced this car correctly. Check the manual.

The VW official word and original statement of the transmission fluid says its for life and never should be replaced... BUT THAT IS WRONG... later VW put out a note stating that every 40k miles the trans fluid should be replaced. Don't wait.

I was ready to get rid of my 2007 Passat for transmission shifting problems. Dealer wanted to replace transmission, my repair guy changed the fluid and still gave it no hope. Then my battery went dead. I put a new battery in the car and now it shifts like a new car! Maybe your battery does not have enough Amps to keep you computer running everything. Check the battery.
