Defective parts, poor quality labor installing those parts or the shop just wants your money and you don't really need it. Sounds like you need a second opinion.

It's the same shop that specializes in Volkswagen and other foreign autos. We switched to them after previous shop for a second opinion years ago and so far haven't been gouging us. They did the last same svc so I'm pretty sure they just want the money too. Does the fact that we need a transmission pan and gasket/fluids due to a leak in said fluid mean since they will be in there that they probably want the "add on svc" because of accessibility? I still don't think we need the parts replaced. Assistance appreciated!

If this vehicle has a timing belt and not a chain it should be replaced. Time is just as important as mileage. The old belt, if that's what we're talking about, is 8 years old. Timing belts should be replaced every 60,000 miles OR 6 years, whichever comes first. The timing belt is rubber and rubber weakens and deteriorates over time. Whether or not it's being used. Plus, if you have an interference engine and the timing belt breaks or jumps, the engine will be ruined! I say, if you plan on keeping the vehicle and it has a timing belt, replace it. You'll be better off in the long run! Hope that helps! Jim

Thank you Jim and G A for the information. Yeah we've got a timing chain in our Euro Van and we've had no problems with the transmission other than the fluid leak unnoticed until I was under the van at the shop inspecting the exhaust line we needed replaced. Has a transmission svc and timing chain system quadrupled in price in less than 10 years. From $1500+/- to $4500+/-? Covid pricing? We just need a transmission pan gasket and svc. Yes, I know it's taking the engine apart, but $3000?

Yes shop labor prices are crazy/stupid high right now. In my tiny neighborhood right now there are 5 vehicles that are broke down and people just don’t have the money to fix them or they can’t get parts, so there they sit. One neighbor went to riding motorcycles, he says at least he knows his old Harley Davidsons and can work on them. So I’ll ride until the snow flies.
