I have a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta five-speed with a 2.0
(non turbo). I was stopped at a stop sign with it in neutral,
then when I shifted into first gear let out the clutch to take
off car would not move . I could put it in reverse & in all
the other gears but it just would not engage. Any ideas?

That sounds like your clutch died.

They have had a problem with a part in the trans clutch actuator as i recall this part is located under a small round cover on trans and can be replaced without trans/ clutch removal i have done this on a customers 98 jetta that others had diagnosed as a bad clutch it had the same symptoms as your Clutch just wouldnt work all of a sudden the repair part is availeable under a dorman part# have your parts store do a part search on it they should have it in stock it was 25 bucks or so if your clutch wasnt slipping before and your clutch slave checks out [no fluid loss] or clutch cable stretched or broke [cant remember which one it uses] then deffinately chk this before pulling the trans do a google search for jetta clutch/ trans problems and look for info on this as i recall it took about an hr hope this helps The Dyno Guy 5 x master ASE tech
