Unlikely because the 1998 is a Mark III and the 2001 is a Mark IV body style. Suggest you google the question and check for respnses on the VW Vortex forum, where the VW mechanics hang out.

The 2001 Cabrio may look like a mklV but that's only a facelift. The latches should be interchangeable.
