Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 VW Jetta.  The engine light came on the other day, when I am at the light the rpms goes down and acts like it wants to die, but then they come back up.  Today I was driving down the road and the engine turned off and the check engine light and battery light came on.  What could the  problem be.
