I have a 1998 Golf mk 4. i have emulsion in the top of the oil filler cap and engine tank. I have flushed the engine and put new oil in and new oil filter, emulsion has appeared again within a few days, any ideas what the problem is, and what may cause it, and any ideas how to rectify the cause.

Hi Mark4. I have been chasing this one down for a couple of days without results. Maybe it's time to drop a dime to your local VW service manager and see if he can identify the issue. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck!
I also have a 1998 Golf GL with a 2L engine and have had the same problem. I change the oil regularly (3500 Km max) and filter. Last time I flushed the engine too. Within 2-3 days emulsion was back. I drive it at least 30 km so it is fully warmed up. This only happens in the cold weather. I'm not leaking and coolant into the engine. I'm perplexed.
Sounds like it could be poor crank case ventilation, I had a similar problem with a 1990 1.8, it was a vacuum leak causing low air pressure in the crank case venting. Check your rubber hoses for cracks, leaks. Once I replaced the hoses after a couple short (2000kms) oil changes it went away.
Hi, I also have this problem on a 2002 Golf GTI 2.0L 8V. My m8 is a mechanic and deals with VW's alot. He tells me it very common and caused by too much condensation, unfortunately nothing can stop it. Apparently it does nothing to the engine, but you must keep the breather pipe clean, its right next to the oil cap on mine. I use carb cleaner every 2 weeks. Supprising how quick it comes back. My engine was really bad for it at first, as it was untreated, it took about a month of constantly cleaning the breather pipe and just inside the oil cap to get it down to almost nothing. Using decent long life oil has helped too. I now use Total 5/40 long life and its alot better. But remember, if you dont keep the breather pipe clean it will come back inside the engine and round the oil cap. Rob
i had---had the same problem check the oil cooler worked for me
