This is a common VW problem that has nothing to do with the transmission or fluid as mentioned. It is a faulty brake switch. Here is the work around if you are stuck. 1. Put the key in ignition, turn 1/4 turn. Do not go so far that the dashboard lights go on. 2. Using right hand, shift car out of park to a spot between neutral and drive. Hold the shift lever in this position with your right hand. 3. Using left hand, reach through or under the steering wheel and turn the ignition to the start position to start the car. Once started, you should be able to shift to drive. If you need to go in reverse to start out then you would want to hold the shift lever (step 2) in the position between park and reverse or neutral and reverse. - POSTED BY "CAST AND BLAST" IN THE TDI FORUMS

Hi. I fail to get an answers to my problem here. My golf 5 automatic, is not indicating on which gear is the gear shift, even if it is in P etc. On top of that, the car can't start with an ignition. Unless at the starter. But even though it does start there, the gears both on the gear lever and on a screen still doesn't show which gear it is. All gears on the screen are highlighted in red and flashing. What is the problem? Is the hear shift burned?
