I have a volkswagon jetta engine 1997ish my
husband randomly bought. How do I identify it for
sure?  The only numbers I found were
037103021m f71

Try using a VIN decode web site such as decodethis.com. That should tell you the engine type.

I just verified, this site will tell you exactly which engine was in the vehicle when it was manufactured. For Example: 2.0L L4 SOHC 8V
