did they make vw jettas in 1994 with 4 spd manual transmissions?

Asked by shawnweerts Apr 04, 2016 at 09:19 PM about the 1994 Volkswagen Jetta

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I went to look at a 1994 vw jetta3 gl I was considering purchasing, and was told it had a 4 speed manual trans. I drove it, and it indeed had a 4 spd manual trans. But I didn't think they made cars that new with a 4 spd. any help would be awesome.

it cant be just no. I drove it and its there. its set up like a 4 spd, not a 5 missing 5th gear. maybe a swap to a really old trans? but would one that old bolt up to a 94 2.0l?

the 1994 (stateside) is the 3rd generation (mk3) and was available in 3 engines, 2.0L 4cylinder (aba) engine with a 5 speed, VR6 12v also 5 speed, and diesel, also 5 speed. There is a 1.6 and 1.8L 4cyl for other markets. From the factory they were all 5 speed or a 4 speed automatic.
