Begin at the battery, well connected? clamps and posts cleaned to a shine, then reinstalled and tight ? now try leaving the jump cables on for 10 min. while the donor car is at 2K RPM. Or just try another battery. report.

car was driving, then shut off wont restart. low rrr then click click. classic description of a discharged battery. Wont take a jump. classic description of the same battery, still completely discharged with connections that have resistance. I for one suspect the rattling sound could be the same clicking and trying to engage the starter with a discharged battery and connected to corroded cable ends. The Volvo bullrtins i have read urge the tech to clean the connections at both ends to a shine, but not add any bite washers between the cable end and the part. You could verify this is so on your car while you are charging the battery.

If the car cut off when running, and lock,s down like this, you may need to check the timing, may have jumped, that rattle may have been the timing idler broke loose.

Check the cables connections to the computer in front of the passinger feets. The passinger could have kicked them loose. Seem like a computer madual problem.

The sound they can get during an attempt to crank engine with connection trouble in the cables and cable ends can be showing battery volts below minimum. This can also be like an "electrical difficulty" you hear. The parts that are pulled by reluctance are "fluttering". This car company has issued a bulletin about increasing surface contact of their cable ends and eliminating extra washer between, at the connection. This means you hear the starter try. but it cant , cause the cables are bad connections. You would clean and correct cable ends, charge up the battery, service its water needs with distilled water. have the cable ends clean and tight fitting. try again. If you jumpstarted it, you would still need to do the other.

The sounds the asker speaks of are like a slow cranking starter and a dead battery. The ignition parts, fuel computer that are at the passenger's feet but behind a panel have no audible mechanical parts used in a volvo when cranking the engine. You may hear electronics there.
