S90 1998 Volvo transmission problems???

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1998 S90 Volvo and had something go wrong, we think with the transmission. I was driving along and it started to loose power. I then went to switch it into a lower speed and even park and the shifter would not move. We think it might be the transmission but not sure. The fan keeps constantly running when you turn the car on. Does it sound like it is going to need a new transmission or could it be something electrical? We just put a new engine into about a 1 1/2 years ago and the car interior/exterior is in excellent shape. It does have 150,000 miles on it....

Was the temperature gauge reading hot? Is the temperature reading at all? If the temperature gauge is not working you likely have a bad coolant temperature sensor, and on these cars it can cause very poor engine performance. Sometime this will put the car into "limp home mode" and you will not have 1st gear. If the cars computer cannot detect the temperature, it will signal the fan to run constantly. The button on the shifter commonly sticks with age, If it is stuck it may cause issues selecting gears.
