I have the exact same problem and never ended up fixing it. The gear that turns the numbers within the odometer is connected with the ABS light so that complicates it a bit. Then my mechanic said that the part is very cheap but it is a half day of work because the process is labor intensive. I was quoted about $200 for the repair.

There are full directions on a Cd at http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-850/Interior/Odometer-Repair-Kit/p-72-158-406/ It can get kind of tricky since you have to pull the instrument cluster out but other than that not too bad. The kit which includes the instruction manual and the gear from IPD comes to around $50.00
