440 c.i. is one the most popular engines that it had, but it also had the 383, 360, 318, and what kind of Mopar would it be if it didn't have the 426 HEMI. but the 440 is all you need. if it is built right, then it is better then the hemi.

those 383s are screamers!! I'm deciding whether to use my 440 or 383. Either way they're getting stroker kits.

i'd stroke a 440 and throw a six pack on it

No 360 ci engines in the charger in 1970.....put down the pipe

I cant gaurantee this off hand but I would say you would be hard pressed to find an R/T with a 318,in the SE,for sure.i will double check on this and get back

need to know fifth digit of vin tag , then I can tell you exactly

the best part of a 383 is it's 3.38 stroke . it will spin nine grand . why would you want to stroke it ? you kids ????

If you own a '70 charger and you can't tell what motor it is simply by opening the hood ,you got the wrong car cause you are an idiot .you'd be better off buying a cart and hauling around a horse in it . What are the odds that you did'nt get that one either? Buy a shovel for the horse shit you immagined to be a car story and leave the good parts cars for those that need them . ..... Jack (my last tranmission to you unless you can impress me real soon about something that's true .) Answer to your last q. Just big enough to keep idiots like you on the porch. I SAY AGAIN WHATS THE FITH DIGIT OF THE VIN TAG AT THE BASE OF THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDSHILD ? ( THERE i GO AGAIN GIVING OUT MORE INFO THAN I WAS ASKED ) DO YOU REALIZE HOW STUPID THIS QUESTION MAKES YOU LOOK ? And even if I went to great lengths to educate you on your new favorite topic (which for now we will call it pissen me off) I wonder if you would like a V-8 or a sick sylinder? I will continue if you correctly answer one question for me . what was the last dodge inline six cylinder engine called ? It's easy they only made it for 25 years and it never changed . (bonus : why did it tilt to the left ? ) you must be precise with your answer one ounce more or less than required will cause DETONATION Looks like your home work is ready for you to begin . I will expect an answer to all 5 of the above questions or i'm done with you . Funny thing : you have no idea who it is that you are talking to right now , if you were aware ,you would be focused a bit better so that i would be able to serve you at a more professional level ... gotta go , some one needs knowledge of a truely genuine nature ,not mamby pamby peel the bazooka joe off my shoe and stick it under the stool for later . Naaa i'm good for what ever you want to know man but you have to be sure what you want to know BEFORE asking . Remember i said that ... PEACE, Happy holidays PBN

look i am giving you Boys the benefit of the doubt for now because y'all seem a bit green . But for the last time .... NOTHING BEATS A HEMI EXCEPT ANOTHER HEMI !!! AH AH AHH , NO DEBATES, IT THE LAW . ( IF IT WERE DEBATABLE , EVERY MOTOR WOULD BE A HEMI , BUT IT CANT BE A HEMI CAUSE THERE'S ONLY ONE (LIKE THAT TIGER ON WINNIE THE POOH AND TIGGER TOO . i'M THE ONLY ONE !! ) there is an air cooled variant of an airplane engine thats laid out exactly like our beloved HEMI , called the Tatra engine from the middle east . but it's not often out of the desert over there so it's not well known around here unless you just happen to CRAVE any and all information about hemi related stuff enough to read about it after you dig it up . (not all of what is written is truth ) rarely does truth find its way to be written .(secrets) Almost never does anything get remembered exactly as it is or was , and that's why i am here for you , Awaiting a question .

restore the car and put it up for ten years then sell it and buy the car of your dreams ... seriously ,be careful about daily driver hot rods ,lack of repair parts doesn't make up for the other guy when he runs the stop sign and puts you in the NOOOO mode . If your like me , my driver ain't been drove in eleven years cause of them Duke boys when they wrecked the last 69 with a good front end that I could afford .. now i need to make friends with people with car friends for friends with cars without front ends 'cause of them dukes.... Yee.. haww my ass !

6,135

No 360 i n a charger 'till '72 or 3 , no 383 after '71. in '72 ,400 replaced 383 across the board .except for a few trucks till they run out of 383 motors , then all 400's . first year of the 360 was 1970 . available that year ONLY in the black DODGE MONOCO four door . Yes Black , Yes ,4 door .. Two barrel carb only . 240 Hp . car was test bed for 360's higher torque over the 340 whizzer and better gas mileage than smogger 383 , with about the same torque !

Carmen is the name. This is a quetion debated by mopes for years .Which mopar was the fastest? As much as i love chargers, according to the mopar experts.the fastest quarter miler was the !968 Dart,426 hemi with a cross ram dual 4 barrels. This car ran the quarter mile in 11.2 out of the show room and 10.9 with slicks.Hot Rod magazine.Btw Peter,I havent checked and I wont because of my confidence in your knowledge.Thank you for the info abot the 360 in the monaco.i would have argued otherwise.I did know that the 360 was not available in the charger, positively.

yea I got side tracked for a couple of days , back to the show.. the 1968 hurst hemi dart was a factory drag car made to compete in the ss/a class they were stripped of any unnesessary weight . Even the window riser mechanisms wre removed in favor of a lightweight seatbelt strap with a pinch clamp stop . no radio ,heater , mirrors , glove box door ,etc. there was a good article in hot rod or car craft way back in the early '80s that puts it all on paper . the engine of course was the king of the hill 426 drag race hemi ,(CODE A-990) about 650HP on real good gas . I was thinkin they got these cars down into the low nines ? they ran em for ever at the strip cause they dominated their class and had no competition . I haven't kept up on my reading cause my eyes ain't no good any more , but as of the '90s they were still out there . they supposedly made a few at the dodge main building early on in '68 ( about 5 or 10? ) then they farmed out the remaining 75 cars to be built by hurst . Creative industries .. whew . I hate this old age shit . that almost wore me out ... if you want exactomundo details , I have an extensive library spanning the last 25 to30 years , all the mopar mags , chrysler power HPmopar , Mopar performance , mopar muscle . but I would need several days to dig . online reference is probably the easyest but the info may have become skewed if it's not directly from chrysler historical society . Ok man . sox and martin had one of these for quite a while you might want to start searching there .

440's don't need stroked my son, they need better flowing heads . period . spend the money where it will do the most good , the heads > chapman racing heads , colorado . or Indy cylinder heads indianapolis, In stroking a motor to gain 40 or 50 cubes will gain you MAYBE 50 hp. IF your heads will keep up with the extra flow required from the increased displacement of your now hungrier for more air to make the same or more power motor . Better heads flow much better AAHHH so the power band can be stretched into more rpm with the same displacement so a better cam profile (to match the heads ) will compliment the entire package . you build your motors however you want but remember this, (it's true ) 750,000 440's is all there ever was or gonna be . don't waste whats left. I got an even dozen of em . so I'm set for a while

he's right, alot of the big engine performance companies say horsepower is in the heads but you can get new 440 blocks and crate engines from mopar so it's not likely the supply will run out

6,135

I did not know they were repopin the blocks too . who's foundry are the using ?

6,135

you could get an charger R/T with a 383 in 69 , but you had to order the r/t package then delete the 440 for a 383

I personally, Peter, appreciate your vast knowledge of mopars.Myself ,at 50,grew up with these cars in a small farming community in saskatchewan ,Canada.I pocess considerable knowledge as well but not to your dgree.I watched an episode of Top Gear with that euro trash dude testing a 1968,R/T,Charger 440 with the 4spd manual. He absolutely trashed the cars performance and handling.i wanted to choke the life out of him. What he totally missed was the feeling you get when you r behind the wheel of these throaty sounding, rumbling street monsters .There is no other feeling like it.These Mopars are the Harley davidsons of the Car industry.Hence,I wave my genitals in this mans general direction,Peter ,i like your style and you r correct in telling the dude above that if he pops the hood on a 1970 charger and doesnt know the engine size he should be looking to buy a Honda Civic.Oh by the way...that Dart article was in Hot rod ....cheers

6,135

Hey hey !!!!! I'm not just blowin in the wind !!! alright , And thanks for the memory fix about the dart , You my friend are in the box . yea ,and I still don't get that 70 charger thing . if he would just give up the fifth digit of the vin he would be home free . ( my guess is he doesn't have the car hence no reference to vin # ) I bought my first mopar when I was 13 . that was 1974 . my mentor was a mopar man . He tells me things when i'm stumped to this day ! Where are you now? still in canada ? I'm concerned the price of gas is gonna weed out the hobby guys and make our mopars all trailer queens for yuppies to haul around to the auctions . myself , i am gonna have to sell my cuda to fix my charger or vice versa , I don't want to do either so for now they sit . pleased to meet you

6,135

Oh yea I almost forgot , when I had my 69 tweaked real good ( new front end steering gear and ball joints etc. ) I could hang a cloverleaf , the inside loop mind you ,at 75 MPH with out a sweat . yea , the tires complained a little but it was a just a nice two degree drift . the last fifty yards of the curve I hammered it so I would be 30 degrees when I hit the merge lane (yes it took both lanes but it looked cool as hell ) ANd no thats not how the car got wrecked !! It ain't no viper by any means but if you sneak up on the point of no return you can be impressed . It needed more sway bar and a firm feel box .

I am still in canada, and all this mopar talk has really got me reminiscing.Growing up al the farmers in the area had brand new ,Chargers ,Cudas,Superbees, coronet R.T,dusters ,Demons. There wasnt one Chevelle...why....because they all played second fiddle to the Mopars. My first Mopar was a 1969 charger SE. with a 383 magnum with auto. This car was a screemer .The 340,s didnt have a chance.I used to run it with high octaine av gas...and oh man did that make a difference. These cars were designed to run with high octane fuel and would ping if the octane level wasnt equal to the task.My older brothers fisrt mopar was a 1969 GTX,Rag Top,440 mag with auto.He paid 2300 dollars for it in 1971.It was beautiful.I still remember the goosebumps i felt when he pulled into the driveway with it.I was 11 and the goosebumps that car pvided me with are still visible today.I hope to and am looking for a mopar now even if it means loosing my wife.Reason being,I take care of it ,it takes care of me and wont fuk me over.Plus at this stage ,it feels better to ride the Car...lol

6,135

with the alledged five dollar a gallon price ceilling on fuel this summer ,now may prove a good time to find you a ride . I have dislocated my right shoulder and I really doubt if I'm gonna be bangin gears with a hurst shifter and a A833 box . the car has been wrecked in a ditch (no collision ) the frame has been straightened (frame table ) 400.00 wasnt too bad . It's a 383 FaCTORY HURST 4 SPEED WITH CONSOLE AND AIR cond, P/S , not much for brakes , 10x2IN drums w/o power all the way round . this is the catch 22 . to get 4sp with AC ,had to order base charger , then add 383 , 4 speed and A/c . non power drums was all the brakes a base charger could get . any way it's fixable , I live in east central IL. my phone is on facebook call me and we can talk . Price ? 10,000.00 . It ain't wrecked that bad . it's all there and it's in good cond . See my garage for photo's

6,135

Just a curiosity , this is peter again . Just how fast is your ancient deciduous forest dissaparing up there ? I'm sure you know it's the last one on the face of this earth and when it's gone it's gone forever and someday sooner than you could immagine sadly , it will be gone . I was thinking I would surely love to see the last god made natural wonder of the world extant (still living ) If I get a mopar of mine under control someday I would love to do the drive , Maybe a cruise , through the woods ?

50

The logging buisness up here is very regulated and all involved are very aware of the danger in over logging.I wouldnt worry about it disappearing any time soon.At least by our hand. With that being said ,we loose more forest to natural fires and beatle infestations then we do to logging.....take care

LOL.. Poor fella, never claimed he owned a '70 Charger he was just asking a simple question.

65

You could buy any engine you wanted back then from a slant six to a hemi.

Thank you, Peter, for all your knowledge. I, too cut my teeth on Mopar muscle, having owned a 1973 Plymouth Road Runner GTX440, 300hp, 3:08 rear, A727 slap stick auto, Basin Street Blue w/ white stripes and whitewalls with Magnum 500s at the tender age of 18. I bought the car in 1976 with 19,000miles for $2200. I got the car from a li'l ol' lady who wanted a smaller car. Oh she got one alright--a 'Cuda 440! As for the RR wish I never sold it...

125

The question was: what size engine does a 1970 dodge charger have? I know nothing about cars to the extent that any of you answered this guy. As an old lady I can definitely tell you that this was a very stupid question. I even know how to look under the hood and see the size of engines - or just Google the darn question. Looks a bit suspicious to me... I know that my piece of car for sale is a 3.5 hp engine!

125

On looking back at the original post, Kye posted September 2008. Case closed for me.

6,135

sometimes I get a little carried away .... sorry .

6,135

no thanks. my stable is full of memmories I cant drive .... but I sure as hell can look at them !!!

50

318ci, 383mag, 440mag, 426 hemi....I don't think they came with 6 cylinder and if they did I have never seen one

10

There is always that guy that posts a nasty response tearing the OP up and telling him that his question is stupid and shaming him for "not knowing what engine he had under the hood of his car". Except...the question wasn't "what engine do i have?" The question was "what engine came in 1970 Charger?" The correct answer has yet to be submitted for this really old post. That answer would be that The 1970 Charger, being a B Body, had an engine bay that was designed to accept every engine manufactured by Chrysler that year. 426 Hemi, 440 (both 4V and 6V), 383, 340, 318, and both the 225 and 198 CI versions of the venerable slant 6.
