66 street hemi rocker arm travel

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When checking the valve lash was quite concerned  how far the rocker arms
travel along the shaft when when the rocker arms are sitting on the base circle
of the cam. If they really move that far in use the rocker tips will engage about
half of the valve stem. They all do so must be normal? This is an all original 66
street hemi never rebuilt. Thanks, Steve

OMG, what a gold mine you have going on there! Yes that is normal. If you are doing anything with this motor, absolutely make sure everything is done right! These engines are rare...a big part of history.

The rocker arms are just following the lobe of the camshaft to open the valves.

Yes I thought this rocker travel must be part of the design but never had seen it mentioned anywhere in the literature. This engine is in my 66 coronet 440, 13,900 miles facrory survivor that I am making ready for auction at Auburn. I may have more questions. Thanks, Steve
