coolant temp sender for the gauge is located on a cylinder head near the fire wall, a coolant temp sensor is in the intake manifold next to thermostat housing. if the temp gauge isn't working they have problems with the gauge in the dash and the sender is not usually the problem.

Depending on the engine, the sensor would be in different places, I know that both the 2.2L and 2.5L 4 cylinders has the sensor on the cylinder head right by the upper radiator hose. It should be really easy to get to. But for the 6 cylinder and the 8 cylinder, I am not certain.
