Any codes? I'd be Leary of the amount of fuel that's in your tank if the gauge isn't working.

I have been getting a 302 (misfir) over the last year occasionally it goes away and comes back and I know the tank is 1/2 full. The confusing part is after I stop and shut car off and start back up a few minutes later gas gauge show the correct fuel level.
