In my opinion they were a good engine, relatively tough, but not worth a crap compared to a 4.0. My mom owned a 1995 Wrangler with a 2.5 in it and it maxed out at 97 mph. I owned a 92 with the 4.0 in it and it had noticably more power, but if you're not pulling a trailer or trying to turn 35" tires the 4 cylinder is a good powerplant

I owned a 99 and it wasn't going to win any land speed records. Mpg's around 19-24. If you find one with an automatic don't touch it, not worth the effort be better off learning how to drive a stick. There are a few upgrades out there most I found new air filter, plugs wires header open fit up so it can breath. All in all good engine and I xo believe they had 4:11 gears for more torque. Damn thing would climb up a wall b ut passing on the highway good luck.

I have a 4 cylinder. It won't set any land-speed records. In fact, if you're going up a pretty good graded hiway, expect to downshift. If, however, you are just enjoying the ride, it's fine. Of course, I've never owned the 6 cylinder so can't compare.

I loved my 4 cylinder. Revved quick enough for me to use it. Only get the 5 speeds though. The automatic just doesn't cut it. If you don't plan on doing alot of highway riding, drop the gears to 4.88 front and rear. It'll go anywhere you point it and get you there in pretty decent time too. I had a '97 TJ.

2.4 with 6 speed is a great combo. Gets 22 mpg hwy. Same 1/4 mile as the 4.0 but 280 lbs lighter. Also has more torque at any rpm than the 2.5 source: Automobile catalog . com
