1983 to 1992 are all the same in the golf's or jetta's. The engine shouldnt really matter. Why do you say you need a new harness? Is there a short in it? Does the fan work hooked directly up to the battery?

Thanks Chris!! That is helpful. As far as the actual problem goes, it is that the wiring harness has a connector underneath the battery pan, and it seems over the years it has corroded from battery acid(?) and the corrosion is interferring with the fan function, so the engine keeps getting over heated without the fan to cool it. Holla back, and again thanks!
