For the "63" production year the following sequence appears: Jan - 5288727 Dec - 6016120 All the 63 cars only had 7 numbers in the VIN numbers

Excellent! My sequence starts 512...... So I am assuming what I am looking at is the VIN#. Thanks a million, this clears up the confusion.

According to Samba website, your car was made Oct. 1962

WOW!! All these years I thought I had a 1963. Could it be a 63, built early? If not I am proud to say I have a 1962 beetle, that's even better. You're wonderful.... Thank you.

It is likely sold as a "63" even though it was actually made late in 62. Not much different than how we make and sell cars in the US.

Agree that it is likely a 63. It would have a "fresh air" engine if it is. Different fan shroud and muffler. You will see two large air hoses and one small pre heat tube. A 62 will have only the small hose.
