72 Super Beetle Ignition Issues

10

Asked by T_bug_86 Mar 02, 2019 at 10:34 AM about the 1972 Volkswagen Beetle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The guy I bought the car from had just straight wired to get
it to start. Said it just stopped working on him at the store.
He plugged the wire into the connector on the red with
black stripe wire and ran inside. Another wire from the
battery.. When I crank in use the key to turn the switch on
and everything works but to actually get it to fire I touch the
wires together.  I'm trying to fix this issue because I got this
car for my son. Any ideas on where to start? I put all new
fuses in...

I would extend the wiring and add a hidden switch under the dash on those loose wires to the coil. Then at least you have a measure of added security. You could opt for having a new ignition switch installed and wired. Perhaps it could all be re-wired to the OEM ignition switch.

I don't know that anyone can help you based on that description alone, but check that the ignition switch is working correctly or replace it if not. A wiring diagram would help, you'll have to find a repair manual for your car. Check on a VW Beetle forum, another bug owner might be able to help you out.

Thanks. The switch seems to work fine it lights up the dash and such it just doesn't make the engine turn over. I have a book for this model and have been looking at the wiring g diagram was just hoping someone could throw something out there before I go to chasing all the wires. I do plan on putting a new ignition in anyway so I guess i'll start there.
