I am familiar with Karmann Ghias. My question is about our 1972 VW Beetle we just bought. Is the Karmann edition something like an Eddie Bauer Edition Ford Explorer, just a marketing gimmick?

Ok sorry 'bout that. Wilhelm Karmann GmbH, commonly known simply as Karmann, in Osnabrück, Germany, was until 2009 the largest independent motor vehicle manufacturing company in Germany. For more than a century, they have undertaken various roles, from design to production and assembly of components, for various automobile manufacturers; including Chrysler, Porsche and Volkswagen Group. It apparently was built there, as VW has manufacturing plants all over the world

I have a 1968 karmann beetle convertible. Is this rarer than a "standard" VW convertible?

It appears that nobody knows the answer to the question. I want to know myself. What is the significance of the Karmann designation?
