Worse case is the syncros in the tranny. Easy fix is adjusting the shifter. If this is your first VW,the best manual to get is How To Keep Your VW Alive For The Complete Idiot. Very good book to have.

double clutch it- or, adjust your driving to where you don't have to go from 3rd to 2nd- or, hold the shifter up against the 2nd slot and adjust the engine rpms until it just slides in- or, all the above- don't worry, old beetles ain't perfect, never were, never will be- and they are not expensive- you just bought a ticket to the funky side of life- adjust yourself to the reality of the car and don't expect perfection- this is the Way of the Beetle

I would say adjust the clutch or at least check its adjustment possibilities, then take the advice from the first two answers. My family owned three VW Bugs and its the same advice I would give you.

Cool thanks for your heads up, I feel the way of the beetle has already begun adjusting me to the ways, may the funk be with me cheers
