Volkswagen Super Beetle Needs Motor
Asked by Squirtle Jun 20, 2009 at 01:55 PM about the 1973 Volkswagen Beetle
Question type: Shopping & Pricing
I am currently interested in purchasing my first Volkswagen Beetle. I have located a 1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle but it is in need of an engine. The questions are these: What type of engines will fit this year and where should someone look to find a cheap engine in need of a little repair other than Craigslist?
Thank you for reading and I hope you can help.

71 to 74 are the best fit dual port carb engine junkyards rebuilt or junk cars have yours rebuilt or just buy the lower end rebuilt and use your stuff
Any type 1 engine will fit. It's usually best to look for a later dual port motor, but even the older single ports would be ok. For thar matter, the old 36 and 40 horse motors will fit. If you find a used engine its buyer beware. Most will need to be rebuilt, and if you don't have the skills to do it yourself, you may be better off buying a new motor. Depending on your location there are several places that sell motors in various stages. You can get anything from short blocks all the way to complete turnkeys. Where are you located?
