Believe it or not, Recaro makes an excellent child seat with very good head and neck protection that should extend high enough. How old/tall is the boy? Perhaps a lower safety seat is available. You could also look at installing a padded crossbar over the rear seat back.
do the small flip down rear seats in a ranger extended cab fit a car seat? I think they would , you could fit two of them, in a bug, Yay!
OMG- you put your son in a Beetle and worry about safety?! REALITY CHECK- a beetle will flip if you just look at it cross-eyed- if you have kids, it's time to get a modern vehicle that handles better and is more crash-worthy- and stop customizing for safety- yikes
well at least you are trying to be safe. however, you need to have the right seat for your child. I am a certified child safety seat installer. if the seat in the car is not tall enough, then you need to get a different child safety seat. you also don't have shoulder belts in that car, so it is not safe for your child to ride with just the lap belt in a booster seat. you need to get a high-back booster seat with a harness to properly restrain your child. it is not safe to put other seats in the car trying to make it safer, and I realize that you may not have the ability to buy a newer vehicle that would offer more safety features.
