Although the car does not have a clutch peddal, the transmission has a clutch. When you press on the shifting lever a switch activates a vacum pump that actuates the clutch engaging the transmission to the enginer.

The vacuum operated clutch had a pressure switch on the gearshift. Problem was, if you touched the gearshift while you were driving, it would activate the clutch and, well, think of hxitting the clutch pedal while driving - same idea. Even worse, there was a small grounding wire on the switch, when it came off (like mine did) there goes everything.
