where do I find the transmission fluid container on a 1987 vanagonGL manual transmission?

Manual transmissions don't have transmission fluid. Are you by chance referring to the clutch cylinder?

Seriously? tell me you typed that sentence out wrong ? All transmissions have fluid, even standard.
Manual transmissions use 80W or 90W gear oil, not ATF.
Incidentally, the oil is contained in the transmission case, it doesn't have a separate container. There should be a plug you can undo to check the level. Usually you just stick your finger straight in and if you can feel fluid then it is full.
