I have 87 vw cabriolet that is blowing the fuel relay. What would cause this?

I have 87 vw cabriolet that the fuel relay keeps going out on.
Would like to know what is causing this to happen.

I would check the fuel pump ground and see if there is a corrosion issue there. That could cause the circut to draw extra amps. I have seen this problem happen when there is an internal short in the fuel pump itself. The unit will continue to work fine but it is drawing to many amps and will burn out the relay. Replacement of the fuel pump is the only way to solve the problem at that point.
