What could cause my starter to keep going out

Asked by Rosaib Dec 08, 2014 at 01:25 PM about the 2007 Dodge Caliber

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Yes I have a 2007 dodge caliber and
the starter keeps going out. This is
the fifth starter in since we got it we
had less them half a year and had
nothing but trouble it was in the shop
a month after we got it. They first
was saying that it was a defective
starters then they said it was the
battery replace that and still the
same thing. We don't hear anything
and it's running fine before we shut it
off but then we go to leave and
nothing no clicking noise no sounds
like it's trying to turn over nothing
and the same thing happens every
time is there any advise in what I
should do or tell them to look at. The
only place that been working on it is
the dodge dealership not no back
yard mechanic this is what the
dealership is telling us. Mind you we
have a loan on the car so we are
paying for a car that's siting and now
have no car

Insist on knowing what they found ... don't except "bad starter" .. Then go to the manager get his name and tell him you are sendingi a letter to Dodge HQ and your state agency regulating repairs. If you fail to vigoriously pursue this then you are telling them that it;s ok to screw you. If everything fails ... Go Nuclear by posting in the auto sales section of Craigslist " @@ for sale ### mechanics can;t fix it" (@@ is make of car) ### is the dealers name Then put the message you posted to cargurus in the message body with the service managers name. Nothing illegal about doing this and it will get almost instant results

All these stater,s were not bad,by replacing a number of stater,s and you still have this issue, there are two thing,s that could be the problem, wiring going to starter,or bad igintion switch.

Some mechanics work like their following the car in front of them. When that car goes off the cliff, they go off right behind him. They have "tunnel Vision" and would change the same part over and over again and be content "that job is done" These guys will brag about being a car mechanic when in fact ,, you can train a monkey to mimic. 5 starters in a year tells me the service manager is spending too much time studying some saleslady's butt instead of reading this cars history. 2 maybe 3 starters however before the third starter is installed I want the primary cause revealed. What ever happened to common sense?

Sounds like your starter(s) isn't/aren't being grounded, properly.

Did anyone get any feed back on why you kept needing to replace your starters. I am in the same boat with my 2006 dodge caravan. I’m on my 4th Starter and again it is acting up. Intermittently not starting.

The stater on my 2007 Dodge Caliber turns on while the car is in motion. I have to turn off the ignition and the starter keeps going until the batterycable is disconected. Please if you have an answer to this submit it to jsantana665 @yahoo.com. Thanks so much. Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Having the same issue, I feel that the TIPM is going bad order one from eBay less than a 100 dollars, when the starter is engaged, there is sappose to be a signal sent back to the tipm to let the car know that it has started. If the signal is not sent back to the tipm then the car tries to crank again even if you are driving this will damage the starter.

Same problem here. My starter keeps breaking down even if is properly grounded. It suddenly starts while driving. Could it be the ignition acting weird?

I'm having the same problem with my starter, don't hear anything and it's running fine before I shut it off but then we go to leave and nothing no clicking noise no sounds like it's trying to turn over nothing. My dodge is 2011 model. can anyone please advise?

Have them check your fly wheel. If there are teeth missing it can cause your starter to go bad. This is what I was told when my starter when out but maybe they was just trying to get me to spend more money who knows

The problem is the totally integrated power module. Otherwise known as the T.I.P.M. Common problem.
