Have there been different analog fuel sending units used in the '87 300ZX 2+2?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Current FSU causes fuel dial to drop to Empty when the tank is actually 3/4 full. My trusted mechanic ordered a replacement and Nissan sent him an FSU that would not fit, three times before he gave up. He has worked on the car for 20 years and knows it is not a turbo but can't figure out why he gets the wrong part.

I f'd up, I trusted him. My mechanic looked at the replacement FSU and "assumed" it wouldn't fit, 4 different times. I thought he had at least tried to put it in. Nope. Showed him another Z site's comments. He finally put it in. Surprise, it fits. Fuel guage works. But, he didn't charge me for the previous times.
