Belt keeps snapping

Asked by GuruVQ2PX Aug 31, 2018 at 10:32 PM about the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My belt was shredded to pieces. Bought a new one
and replaced it at home.  Not even two weeks later
and my belt just snapped.
Also my a/c stopped working after replacing my
belt.
Why does it keep snapping?!

One of your pulleys is not turning freely or out of alignment. First, I would suspect maybe the A/C compressor is seized up and when you turn on the A/C that load is burning up the belt. Next, I would suspect the tensioner is not keeping enough tension on the belt to keep it from slipping. Take a look at the idler pulley too.

One more thing, when checking the A/C compressor to see if it turns, you want to be actually turning the compressor hub (center) not just the outer wheel. You see, with the engine off, the clutch will not be engaging the compressor hub. That outer pulley of the clutch will turn but that is NOT the actually compressor hub. Hope I didn't over explain that.

So just put on a new belt AGAIN, turned the car on and it was making a bad squealing noise still and smelled like burning right away. There was also a bit of rub already noticeable on the belt. I'm hoping I can drive it a bit to get to the shop. Not too sure how far I will make it. I'm assuming I won't make it very far. Thanks for the tips atleast I know a little of what to expect
