perhaps the battery though weak was weakened by a bad alternator??? loose connections, tap the starter with a hammer or something solid, LIGHTLY, not smack it., see if that makes a difference, one or 2 taps would make a difference, as the windings usually get bound up with metal that worn off the brush. let me know if either helped.
Ditto....maybe a hard rubber hammer, or like John said, don't beat the dog crap out of it if you use a ball peen. Sometimes I think a hammer should not be allowed in the tool box of a certain person I know, his motto is if whatever you do does not work, get a bigger hammer. Sometimes the bendix does not come out/ retract also, and the taps will free it..
usually when that happens, i takeout the starter. clean the solenoid copper contact.
Had a similar issue on an 01 grand am after replacing a battery However it wasn't the starter. Everything was working it just would not start you would occasionally get a cylinder to fire but it would not completely start. We had to reset the security system completely and then it started right up.
Check the power wire that goes to the starter.Somtimes they break at the connection.
