Pull the fuse door on the drivers side of the dash and look down to the release with a flashlight. You should see the cable end coming through a metal tab on the release bar. If the bar is not 90 degrees to the release lever, it won't open. Push the lever towards the firewall to bend it back to almost 90. If that does not work, put a standard screwdriver between the tab and the lever mount from underneath and use it as a lever to pull the cable tab towards you against the mount. Good news is you can access from interior so no mess.
