Buying Online in Texas

Asked by Guru9PG4L Jul 15, 2017 at 08:22 PM about the 1984 Porsche 911

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Hello everyone,
Looking to buy a car from a private seller in Texas, then register it in
California.
Trying to avoid pitfalls. My current plan is to go see the car in person, but I
am not an expert.
What kinds of questions should I ask?
Thanks!

Buy a California smog legal car or you will not be allowed to register it in California. Look it up on the CA DMV web site. I would try to have a local Porsche expert inspect it.

It should have a sticker that says its 50 State legal or CA legal. Car coming from out of state, you will have to get it "verified." That means it will have to be inspected by a licensed verifier. This can be done at the DMV, AAA, CHP or any other licensed verifier. They will look to see that all the VIN plates are in place and correct. They will also look to be sure the car is certified for sale in California. That will be on the emissions sticker, the one that says something like "This vehicle meets California emissions requirements." Still it will have to pass the smog test too. It really needs to be inspected by a agency/specialist that can do all of these checks to be sure before buying it or get it to California and have them done so you know before buying it. Of course this is after it passes the test to buy in the first place like rust problems or other issues. I would hire a specialist and have them inspect it prior to purchase.

People that move to Kalifornia can bring in a 49 state car but Kalifornia inmates cannot import them.

In some states with inspections, the older the auto the less restrictive to a point in my home State after so many years those auto's only have to pass general safety checks and get their sticker, as long as they run nearly at their best, meaning no excessive oil smoking, if it had blinkers ect. they have to be working, no blown light bulbs, no cracked wind shield or busted glass will pass, or if it had a wind shield it has to retain it to pass, along with seat belts and so forth. Is CA like this, what happens, sell them to other states?
