Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi.  I am a newbie Porsche wanabee.  More like a mid-life crisis guy.  I am looking at a very nice 1988 944S with only 60,000 miles.  Timing belt, tensioner and water pump done at 52,000 kms but 4 years ago. The private seller states all will need to be changed summer of 2012 due to age, not mileage.  The car is very clean in and out and the engine compartment is spotless. Is the age of these parts more important than the very low mileage since changed?

The belt degrades with age and should be replaced. Usually tensioner and water pump are changed at the same time, as to change them separately if needed involves dismantling all the timing mechanism again which is a lot of work, but in your case I would say you definitely don't need to change the pump, and probably not the tensioner/pulley either.

Thanks for the advice. That saves me some worry and a lot of money...for now. I will change the timing belt only if i purchase this car.
