what does that stand for does it just mean it'll go into 4 wheel drive when it needs to

You are correct. My friend has a Trailblazer and I believe their 4x4 system was fully automatic when you turn the selector knob to "Auto" 4x4. You can also select "Manual" which commands it to go into 4x4. That's a nice system because you can have it locked into 4x4 before wheel spins is even detected...before you're in trouble. Yes, that is very desirable system but don't put it into "Manual" on dry, hard roads as it will strain the drive train in tight turns. Have fun.
