Hot day Starting after shut down

Asked by Guru9B6BCJ Jun 30, 2021 at 10:23 PM about the 2003 Saturn L300

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

On hot days 5 to 20 minutes after shut down the starting system does not
function. 20 minutes or so after shut down the starting system works fine.
Obviously, something gets too hot to function then cools down to function again.
Has Anyone had and solved this issue?  Please advise me of your solution.

in the old days some GM enthusiastic people, Would use a ford starter relay/solenoid, that mounts high on the fender lining to try to get away from heat soak. If that's your problem? There used to be instructions all over the internet for wiring it up. I don't have that in front of me? I have posted wiring diagram for your starter motor, I didn't get the starter motor in the diagram, I was trying to make it readable. it is at bottom of diagram, out of the picture. The starter motor has two voltage circuits, one comes from battery, hot all the time, The other circuit goes hot with key in crank position and wired through neutral switch, depending on the transmission. the starter motor grounds through engine block Any testing at starter motor motor, make sure transmission is in park or neutral and parking brake is set. Vehicle can't move. I posted the diagram encase you wanted to do some testing. You see the fuse at top of diagram. good luck
