Loud roaring noise from front end driving above 20 mph

Could be just that or it could be a really bad wheel bearing.

the wheelbearing could be the problem one way to check is putcar on jackstand and with the tire on move tire upand down and see if there is play in it if so wheel bearing is out

Most likely a wheel bearing or axle shaft or both. They start going at around 100,000 miles and make odd noises and vibrations. I think it is unlikely you will be able to detect a bad wheel bearing by moving the wheel up and down. If you have the resources pull the front end apart and do both axles and both bearings and you'll be good as new again. (if that's the problem). When changing bearings buy the best ones available. The replacement ones never seem to last as long as the factory original ones.

Having said all that you really should do a little more trouble shooting to rule out transmission or diff problems. The fact that it gets louder when you stop one wheel makes me wonder.

Great call munron. I thought the same thing when the noise increased when one wheel stopped. The side gear and pinions in the differential would spin twice as fast. The same thing happened to mine and axles and bearings did the trick. My girlfriend complained of a loud bang of metal on metal just prior to the noise starting. Her cobalt only has 72,000 miles which is why I questioned the bearings. OEM bearings usually last longer than 72k.
