Fill your SUV up with gas park it on a slant look under the gas tank see if it's leaking gas there is a recall on the Equinox fuel pumps there's a bad seal mine was covered I have a 2008 as well

If you are smelling gas inside the cabin, it may be the under hood seal that is just below the outside air vent. Since the outside air vent is under the hood, if the hood seal is old, it may not block the fumes from under the hood and you will smell it in the interior. I have a 2012 Equinox with the issue, and the part is $27 at the dealer (not available online).
