LOOKING TO FIND OUT IF MY 66 GTO WOULD HAVE AN ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER TO MATCH THE VIN. IT HAS THE CORRECT XE CODE
1 Answer
Engine serial numbers were not 'matched' to GTO VIN until after 1967. The only real proof is the Protect-O-Plate (if you have it), which has the VIN and engine serial number on it. There are a few things you CAN do on your own to check, however. The XE engine is correct for a 4bbl California 389. Make sure the heads (casting should be "093") and manifolds are correct for the date of manufacture. If the casting and date numbers all fit, you have a "numbers-matching" car. Again, to know for sure if the engine is original to the car, you will need the POP or build sheet from PHS.
